We’re raising awareness of different forms of abuse. Why? Because we can’t address what we don’t talk about and we want everyone to feel safe and supported to seek help if they need it.
We want to start meaningful conversations and highlight the help available to put a stop to abuse, of all kinds, both now and in the future.
Today we’re focusing on the role of Independent Domestic Violence Advisors (IDVAs).
What is an IDVA?
An Independent Domestic Violence Advisor provides one-to-one support to address the safety of victims at high risk from partners, ex-partners, and family members. They work with the person at risk to secure their safety, as well as the safety of any immediate family.
IDVA’s are an essential part of the support and recovery process for people experiencing domestic abuse and act as the main point of contact for them. They proactively implement action plans and practical steps to help families stay safe, which includes support during legal processes.
Studies into the role of IDVAs have shown that the involvement of an advisor in domestic abuse cases has resulted in improvements in safety, including a reduction in the escalation and severity of abuse.
