Got questions about Independent Living?
We've got answers (well most of the time).
Below, you'll find the answers to the most common questions we have about Independent Living properties. But if you can't find the answer you're looking for, please do get in touch.
What is Independent Living?
Independent Living is what it says on the tin. Independent Living homes provide self-contained accommodation, including a kitchen and bathroom. Some also have their own gardens.
But they also often have communal facilities available such as laundry rooms, communal gardens and lounges where social activities are often organised. They offer all the comfort and privacy of your own home, while surrounding you with a friendly, sociable community.
What is the difference between Independent Living and Extra Care?
Both Independent Living and Extra Care mean you have your own home and your own front door. However, Extra Care offers more support. For example, Extra Care has onsite care services, onsite staff 24/7 and meal services if you or your partner needs them.
What is the difference between Independent Living and a Residential Care Home?
Unlike residential care homes, you do not have to have a care or support need to live in an independent living property. Anyone over the age or 55 (or 60 at some schemes) is eligible to buy or rent an Independent Living home.
Independent Living homes are self-contained properties within a complex where you'll often find communal facilities, lounges and gardens.
Independent Living is all about helping you to maintain your independence, in your own home.
How can I apply to live in an Independent Living scheme?
The way to apply for our housing depends on which local authority you want to live in. Many of our Independent Living schemes are let through the relevant local authorities housing waiting list or through Homefinder.

Yes you can. Even if you are a homeowner or have significant savings, you can still apply for Independent Living housing.
